Areté’ is an ancient Greek word, which means “To be the best you can be”. We feel that this represents our company and our products perfectly.
My name is Sue Pryer, and I trained and competed in Ironman Triathlons for over 20 years. Some time ago, I started searching for an energy food which was easy to digest and easy to carry with me on my training sessions. Most of the popular commercial energy bars and sports drinks of today are produced with sugar or artificial sweeteners and preservatives, and I was concerned about how much of these ingredients I was consuming. Unhappy with the options out there, I made a decision that triggered the journey that I am now on.
I created my very own Raw Energy Bar, and I used them while training for and completing my 12th and final Ironman Triathlon in 2003. To my delight, not only did they digest easily while riding the 180km bike leg, but I also didn’t experience the nausea that I always had while riding in previous races.
This was the year I ran my fastest Ironman Marathon and I also won my age group! My husband Ken also completed the Ironman using the Raw Energy Bars that year, and he agreed that these bars gave him high levels of energy that lasted.
Confident that my organic, wholesome recipe was ready to be shared and enjoyed, I decided to give up my flying career in favor of this new adventure, and Areté Wholefoods was born.
Initially my idea was to create an energy source for sporting endeavors, but I soon realized that there was a great need for a nutritious, preservative free snack food that is ideal for diabetics, people with gluten intolerances and allergy sufferers. This was not just for the sports people.
After more research and development, my one product soon became five products, but it didn’t end there. I began to understand the vital importance and the need for organic food.
Areté Wholefoods opened as The Shire’s first raw food organic cafe & market. We serve delicious raw organic salads and deserts, as well as organic coffees and teas, and a range of fantastic organic smoothies and juices. We also stock a large range of organic fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, bread and groceries. But it doesn’t end there.
I also hold ‘raw food’ classes, which teach the value of delicious, raw organic recipes and methods. We also explore many nutrition-based approaches to help with weight control, give you abundant energy and feel pretty amazing.
Areté Wholefoods has grown over the years and I am proud to see how our services have become a part of the local community. I have also been able to see people transform their lives through better eating. My greatest rewards are the times when I can celebrate the renewed vitality and energy achieved by many of our customers. There have been many remarkable accomplishments.
There is a great team of people working in the shop, who share the same passion about good food and nutrition and are always keen to share information with our customers.
Here at Areté, we continue to research what our bodies need to function at optimum health. We follow the wise words of another ancient Greek – Hippocrates:
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”
We believe in motivating and educating our customers to make life-changing choices with their food and nutrition, so that they can be the best that they can be.
