Our Story
The name of our Company - Areté Wholefoods has been chosen to represent our products, as the translation of the word Arete has the meaning - "Striving to be the best you can be".
You now know the meaning of our company name, Areté, but how was this company formed you may ask?
My name is Sue Pryer and after 20 years working as an International Flight Attendant, training and competing in Ironman Triathlons I started searching for an energy food which was easy to digest and carry with me on my training sessions. I was concerned about the large amount of sugar and preservatives I was consuming. Most of the commercial energy bars and sports drinks are produced with these ingredients. The journey to create my own energy bar had begun
I completed my 12th and final Ironman Triathlon in 2003 with the help of my Raw Energy Bars. To my surprise not only did they digest easily while riding the 180km bike leg but I didn’t experience the usual nausea of previous races. My husband Ken completed his first Ironman the same year and we both agreed the bars gave us the energy required to finish the race. This was also the year I ran my fastest Ironman Marathon and also won my age group.
Confident that my organic, wholesome recipes were ready to be shared and enjoyed I decided to give up my flying career and Areté Wholefoods was born. Initially my idea was to create an energy source for my sporting endeavours, but then soon realized that there was great need for a nutritious, preservative free snack food which is perfect for diabetics, gluten intolerances and allergy sufferers – not just for sporting people.
